THE VO2 MAX Test

About the Test

VO2 provides a measure of the energy cost of exercise under steady-state conditions. During an aerobic fitness test such as the VO2 max test, exercise is performed on our Woodway treadmill, for example. Workloads are gradually increased from moderate to maximal intensity while oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide output (VCO2) are calculated. Results are measured in ml/kg/min.
The VO2 Max test uses a Woodway treadmill and the [   ] to perform the VO2 max test. This model Woodway treadmill is the top commercial model treadmill. It features a shock absorption system which reduces impact to lower body muscles, joints and bones – yielding a more comfortable workout. The [ Met cart name   ] delivers simple and accurate fitness testing results. Data measured includes peak VO2, anaerobic threshold and the precise amount of calories burned at all exercise heart rate levels

VO2 max tables - Data from Cooper,K. The Aerobics Way. New York, Bantam Books,Inc. 1982.

The Resting Metabolic Rate test (RMR) determines the amount of energy (calories) your body is using at rest.  This measurement is made by analyzing the amount of oxygen your body uses and the amount of carbon dioxide your body produces.  Almost all of the energy your body produces is created through aerobic (oxygen utilizing) metabolism.  The oxygen is combined with carbohydrates and fats to make energy in your body’s tissues.  This energy is used to keep your organs and tissues working properly.  When carbohydrates and fats are broken down to make energy carbon dioxide is produced.  The percentage of the energy created from carbohydrates and fats can be determined by measuring the carbon dioxide your body produces.

Questions and Answers

What should I wear?

Please wear comfortable running clothing as the test will be performed on a treadmill. A heart rate monitor will also be provided for use during the test.

How long does the test take?

The test will last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, including a results review.

When will I receive my results?

You will receive your results upon completion of the test.

What are the benefits of testing my VO2 max?

When creating a training program, it is always best to know specific training needs. Baseline measurements such as VO2 max and anaerobic threshold provide you with the information you need to find your ideal training zones.
